KING HEDLEY II

By August Wilson
Directed by Ron Himes

Peddling stolen refrigerators hoping to open a video store one day, King Hedley, an ex-con, toils with self-worth. Getting, spending, killing, and dying in a world where getting is hard and killing is commonplace are threads woven into this 1980s installment in the author’s renowned cycle of plays about the Black experience in America. Drawing on characters established in “Seven Guitars,” “King Hedley II” shows how shadows of the past can darken the present as King seeks retribution for his mother’s lies.

Recommended for mature audiences ages 14 up.

Larry & Joe were destined to make music together.

Larry Bellorín hails from Monagas, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe, after a decade in South America, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe.

Currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas, guitar, upright bass, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce.

SPANISH

Larry & Joe estaban destinados a hacer música juntos.

Entonces Larry conoció a Joe.

On this day in 1870, Congress passed the Act to Establish the Department of Justice under President Grant's administration. Grant ordered the new Department to protect the newly freed African Americans in the South from the violence and intimidation of the Ku Klux Klan. The Department also served as the federal government’s enforcement mechanism for the various laws passed to stop the violence in the South. Park Historian and Curator Nick Sacco will give a presentation on the establishment of the Department of Justice and its importance to Reconstruction and the protection of civil rights. This program is one of the park’s Civic Season events.
